LDS 038: Tony Williams, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clarke live in Chateauvallon, August of 1972 PAL DVD

John McLaughlin, Tony Williams and Stanley Clarke. Photo from stanleyclarke.com

Super groups come in short waves in this era and when they do form it has more to do with pr work than it does musicianship. Turn back the hands of time to the early 70′s and you have a much different landscape of musical relationships occurring. If you were not involved in a super group, your career had little longevity. The three men who grace this live video all come from the highest institutions of musical foundation. Individually, they define the qualifications for musical excellence in group and solo improvisation with calculated precision, technicality, fluidity and accuracy. These three men: Tony Williams, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clark.

Tony Williams had begun an extensive branching of many genres into his sound in collaborations with many after his stint with the famous Miles Davis Quintet between 1964 and 1968. Toted as one of the best and youngest drummers around, Tony Williams started Lifetime with fusion pioneer and keyboard player Larry Young. Prior to this recording date, Stanley Clark had graced the Pharaoh Sanders recording Black Unity was gigging regularly with the top musicians in the evolving jazz scene at the turn of 70′s. His works with Return to Forever, Joe Farrel and many others showcase his silky smooth tones and his virtuoso set of techniques. One of the best doesn’t even begin to describe where this guy takes a stand up or electric bass. Jean-Luc Ponty is the wild man of the bunch, having played with Frank Zappa to Mahavishnu Orchestra to Elton John, Jean-Luc pointy conjures up the spirit of Jimi Hendrix on the violin with the precision and lightning speed virtuosity of flamenco players like Carlos Montoya. All three men have changed the face of music and this performance is a summation of all these realities in the most jaw dropping way.

Jean-Luc Ponty. Photo from ponty.com

The contents of this newly surfaced black and white pro shot film are out of this world. The first sequence is dedicated to Stnaley Clark and Jean-Luc Ponty as the two strike line after line around each others melodic voice and phrasing. They both listen with such focus that each switches off to rhythm duties at the exact moment the other switches from that state into soloing. The two men exchange idea after idea and change the dynamic, a feet that should be noted from the usual state these two instruments are used. They both command something new, something more alive and demanding of ones attention than the background situations violin and stand up normally get placed in. There is really beautiful close up shots of each musician and the camera work is always steadily moving, so you don’t ever get the same view for too long outside of the obvious frontal shots.

After this duo exchange is complete the two men leave the presence of the cameras and now all focus is given to drummer Tony Williams. Placing the kick drum as his anchor, he explores his kit in all the different modes of sound before him along with those present. As the drum solo moves further into the corridor of Tony’s thoughts and impulses, you can see him become aware of his kit and the rest of the world just tunes out. His subtle facial expressions and movements of his upper body show how much of a meditative process the drums is. By the end of his solo, his hands are moving so fast and he is sub dividing the beat that it becomes very tranquil, it’s one of the most engaging drum solos I have ever experienced.

After this phenomenal drum solo, Stanley Clark and Jean-Luc Ponty present themselves again and the group goes into a very loose 20 minute ride of musical ideas and possibilities together. Stanley Clark and Jean-Luc Ponty melt into John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, an ode to one of the highest creators in the last century, John W. Coltrane. Tony Williams is attacking his kit so ferociously at times that pieces of the set start to dance and jump away from him, causing him to reposition his kit while keeping perfect time. A true professional. I can also hear what sounds like a Miles Davis bass line from his electric Jack Johnson recordings in 1970. The very end is met with a brief drum solo from Tony Williams, than the band really lets loose and really shows how technically adept they are to adding one of the cleanest endings to a cohesive jam on the spot and in the moment. The source is irrelevant in the big picture. What is relevant is the fact that this gem has been unearthed for all music lovers to appreciate. One of the best pieces of archival footage I have seen in a long time.

LDS 037: Mahavishnu Orchestra live at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL 1972

In the year 1926, a bright nebula formed in the booming Uptown District of Chicago. A man by the name of Andrew Karzas decided to design and open a prolific and beautiful dancing ballroom. The idea of dancing in a commonplace dance hall back in those days was considered unhealthy, immoral and shunned upon. Venues like those often led to the practice of prostitution (for both men and women) while also supplying the then-illegal sales of alcohol.

Mr. Karzas seeked out to reverse these thoughts. It was then that he constructed the amazing Aragon Ballroom. Aragon was to be a very grandiose and beautiful dancehall ballroom, with a courteous staff and strict policy against consumption. The Aragon helped bring the beauty and art of dancing back into the city of Chicago.

After decades and decades of providing the most intimate and wonderful venue services to the fine public of Chicago, the rise of television haunted the age-old art. It was around the mid ’60s that the enormous ballroom could not hold up in the competition anymore. Over the next half century the Aragon Ballroom had been made to host a variety of events whether it be wrestling matches, rock concerts, disco nights or even roller skating. In the present day the magnificent Aragon Ballroom is primarily used for concerts and the occasional dancing.

Snap back to the fruitful and innovative period of the 1970′s, John McLaughlin was on top of the music world. His short but vital stint with Miles Davis and his electric bands of the 60′s and 70′s put him on the map as one of the best and most sought after guitar players. Instead of joining band after band. McLaughlin took it upon himself to assemble one of the greatest jazz fusion bands to ever record, Mahavishnu Orchestra. When his band Mahavishnu Orchestra crossed paths with the infamous Aragon Ballroom Theater, his band was in high velocity mode and nothing was impossible for this group. Break neck tempos, advanced time signatures and multi-layered harmonies that took so much time for the band to rehearse that it became the ultimate demise of this first phase of the band.

The band is on fire for the city of Chicago and those lucky to be there at the Aragon. Nobody holds back in any way possible and you hear some of the most glorious music ever performed live. Billy Cobham crushes the drums, covering every piece of his kit imaginable in the 2 hours of the recording we are presenting of Mahavishnu Orchestra at the Aragon Ballroom in November of 1972. The Aragon had a very harsh reputation with the advent of the “Monster Rock Shows” in the late 60′s into 1970. With some events lasting up to 6 hours, it was a haven for the worlds top jam acts and were legendary cultural statements. 2 years later at the Aragon , McLaughlin and the rest in Mahavishnu would show Chicago why Miles Davis brought him over from England in the 60′s and used him on almost every pivotal 60′s and 70′s album he released.

A year later the group would be doing a full tour with Frank Zappa and the Mothers and their reputation would soar into new territory. This was the beginning before this group dissolved and the characteristics of what Mahavishu represented changed quite a bit. The Aragon was a harsh venue acoustically and the recording does have a harsh presentation. This is being released in our series Love Devotion Surrender for our love with the city of Chicago and to give respect to the cultural landmark that the Aragon Ballroom has begun. If you have heard all of the Mahavishnu Orchestra releases, we highly recommend you check out this audience recording. – Pouya G. Asadi

Here’s a Mahavishnu show that I’ve had since the 70′s. Might be a rare one? How this guy was able to get decent sound out of the sonic cesspool that is the “Aragon Ballroom” I’ll never know. I suspect he was close to the P.A. I did my best on the
set list, but I’m no Mahavishnu expert by a long shot, and don’t have all their stuff. Feel free to correct the set list, and if anybody knows the last song, please post that in the comments section for everybody’s benefit. Enjoy.

LDS 035: Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention BBC 1968 NTSC

Love Devotion Surrender Vol 35

Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention
BBC2 October 23, 1968
Pro-Shot Film
NTSC

The Mothers of Invention and Frank Zappa launched out of Los Angeles in 1966 with one of the most powerful and ground breaking albums of the year, Freak Out. With a full backing studio orchestra and some of the wildest compositions, Zappa and the Mothers showed the world how far sound could be stretched in the span of an hour. With the band living in Los Angeles and New York in the second half of the 60′s, the group found a lot of exposure with performing on BBC. The type of legacy that would surround this era of the band is profound and would set the stage for all of Zappa’s work after it.

Zappa would later disband The Mothers of Invention a year later and reform it with new musicians. With the release of his solo record Hot Rats and many tours, Frank Zappa became an iconic musician in the eyes of those who valued music outside of sales. The video we have uploaded in our Love Devotion Surrender series contains some of the most wild performances of his in my opinion. King Kong had just released on his Uncle Meat record and the band turns out one of the best live versions of the song. This is split it into three parts and all three parts have to be downloaded to play the file. A very special thanks to all the people at Zapateers for making this film possible and setting the standard for quality musician fan communities. – Erik Otis

Lineage:
BBC Master > VHS > DVD > Authoring NTSC

Track list:
King Kong
In The Sky
Apathy Interview

Mintypinto’s Notes:

OK folks, so here’s the story. Just over 15 years ago I had a friend doing some research work at the BBC, I gave her a short shopping list of things that I would love to see her raid the archive for and amazingly she came up trumps with a few selections.

The 23 minute session that FZ and the MOI did at the BBC in London.
Now the ridiculous bit of the story.

The video tape supplied to me was of fantastic quality, a dupe taken from the master and put on to VHS. I kept the video for years and watched it a few times, amazing playing, the band are in top form, JCB and Art Tripp keep up a tremendous rhythm with Roy Estrada and all solos from the band are great.

About 5 years ago I got a friend to digitize the tape to DVD along with a load of other stuff that I had recorded off TV, he did a pretty good job and I was so pleased with it that I threw the VHS copy away.

Of course as time has gone by, technology has got better and better to the point where I could have made a better copy on my £150 TV DVD Harddrive recorder. Dohhh!

Anyway, if you have a fantastic copy of this already, don’t download this but share your copy with us all.

If you have a good copy of this, download this one, it may be better.
And if you have a poor copy or worse still, don’t have it at all, this download is mandatory. It’s brilliant.

Incidently, I noticed at 20 minutes a very quick fade in and out of sound, the band go from King Kong to another track which to the untrained ear may sound like a segue but it ain’t. This implies the band played for longer then is on the tape but this is all I was supplied with. My guess is that the edit was done at the time and what ended up in the BBC archive was all that was left.

Still, we are lucky to have this much great video, fortunately the cameraman were not trying to imitate a bad acid trip by pull focusing and zooming in and out all the time as was the style of the day so what we get is a fairly well shot recording of FZ and the Mothers at the top of their game.

Unicrayon’s Notes:

Extracted the King Kong section from the DVD, added ZT branding and menu and authored the DVD without transcoding.
Extracted the In The Sky and Apathy section from the DVD and added it to the DVD

“In May 1968, Rolling Stone writer Jerry Hopkins and I went up to Frank Zappa’s house high atop Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to interview and photograph Frank for a cover story. For some unknown reason, in the hills above the house was a collection of old and rusting road grading equipment, including this big D-7 or D-8 tractor upon which Frank started climbing and miming and having a good ol’ time.” -Baron Wolman

This is dedicated to all my friends in the Inland Empire. This is a really superb audience recording from Jefferson Airplane at the famous Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, CA. This was the cities and surrounding cities only major venue during the fruitful interval of the 60′s and 70′s. It turned on the crowds of musical lovers in the 60′s and 70′s who lived in the Inland Empire, a venue like it needs to reopen. Enjoy, this concert is incredible! ~ Erik Otis

From Paul Green: The Swing was actually located at the National Orange Show Grounds. In was heavily damaged when a small plane crashed into it in the early 80′s. Never rebuilt. Showcased countless groups through the 1960′s til the time of it’s demise.

Jimi Hendrix and Traffic Studio Session
1968 and 1970

This is one reflection of the changes Jimi Hendrix was going through in his search for new sounds, ideas and approaches to the way he made music. Many people ask where would Hendrix have gone if he had lived, this is in my opinion a perfect beginning or embryonic stage of what I feel was to further blossom into something much bigger if he had lived. Hendrix’s masterful chord phrasing had become much more extensive in the last year he was recording and is in full stride on these recordings. Jimi’s ability to stay in the pocket and let it al build out into full on solos had become more of the standard to the material he left behind before departing from this world. Enjoy this special window into something very unique from Jimi Hendrix, a window few recordings shed light on. Along with Hendrix is his close friends and members of the legendary group Traffic. It is my contention that even if you own this LP… you’ve never really heard it before.

This Dutch album on Offshore Records is the definitive recording of this show. Forget the CD reissue – I have it, it stinks. Upon listening to this record, I found it to be running noticeably slow. It was pitched by ear on the turntable, resulting in an improvement in the sound quality.

This is one of the best Yes performances around, don’t miss it!

comments:
there are a few parts of this where one channel dropped out or had chord/static problems. I monoized those sections so it is all clear 2 channel sound (mostly stereo). this was recorded very close to the stage, maybe even front row. there are a few tape flip cuts but none of the cuts are very noticable after seamless splicing. the last song has a tape flip cut during the spoken introduction and cuts into the beginning of the song. probably just a few seconds were missed there. tracks 4 and 5 are cut near the end of each song. there is a little bit of distortion in a couple of the loudest parts, although the master tape and the WAV files these flac’s come from do not have any saturation or “clipping”. most of it sounds clear and quite listenable. this is one show that could have used a 100 for the 1st set, that probably would have prevented any flip interruptions, but it’s still a nice listen and probably within just a few seconds of the whole long show.

From the file dates, it looks like I did the RM of this nearly a year ago. But seems like a good time to Sly up the Zomb. Mutha funkin’good times!

As stated below, it’s not the best of sources, as from song to song it travels in and out of altering “textures” and a wavering mix. Yet it still felt like a good candidate for a workover and offers an excellent performance. I was able to smooth over some of the wavering and make it a bit more coherent, and all in all it’s an enjoyable listen.

The soundguy has some problems with mixing the vocals from time to time, but hey, it’s a Sly and the Family Stone show….

– Info –

Apart from the radio-sourced and incomplete recording that has been widely bootlegged since its very first broadcast, this one has surfaced as the best and most complete audience source so far and it came from the master cassette through a MiniDisc clone. Also, this is the last Pink Floyd performance of a very famed four-night run at the Rainbow Theatre early in their Eclipsed tour. Amongst all the circulating audience recordings from the four nights, this one probably has the best sound quality of all over them.

The long setlist wasn’t very usual for a concert of this tour because of a extended encore. The main set features what we would know in the following year as the Dark Side Of The Moon plus “One Of These Days” and “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” – the most usual for a 1972 concert. However, the audience kept asking for more and the band was kind enough to play more from their psychedelic era, resulting in a great 2-hour concert.

In despite of a overall great sound quality, this recording sadly suffers of several flaws in some parts which are native from the master tape. There’s a muffling during the 2nd verse of “Time” and from the very end of “Money” to the end of “Us And Them”. A slight decrease in the sounding quality happens from the half of “Eclipse” till the end of the recording, but nothing that makes it an unpleasant listening.

If you feel like improving this recording, feel completely free to remaster, patch, matrix or anything else that will make it REALLY sound better. I only beg you not to use a devil called “noise reduction”.
