DJ Nobody presents his 2011 Winter 60's and 70's Psychedelic Mix with SCV

We are very happy to launch the 2011 Winter Mix from Low End Theory resident DJ Nobody. Based in 60′s and 70′s psychedelia, this is my favorite mix of the year. DJ nobody blows minds weekly at Low End Theory with modern electronica as the foundation. It’s a beautiful treat to see him dive back into the past and pull some gems out of his collections for all of us to enjoy. Happy Holidays from Sound Colour Vibration and DJ Nobody.

-Erik Otis

Here is a brand new mix of 60′s and 70′s psychedelia that I did for the upcoming winter!  Hope you enjoy it!  Happy holidays and hope all is well!- DJ Nobody

Celebrating the 69th birthday of Jimi Hendrix on our online radio with “The Story of Life”

The life of Jimi Hendrix began in the rainy washed out west coast scene of Seattle, Washington and was a life that created one of the most timeless legacies ever seen in modern music. Innovative guitar techniques gave way to an entirely new way to approach the guitar and music in general. He plays with complete feeling and grace, everything he touched was undeniably transformed under his sound. When analyzing the sheer amount of musical ideas he had developed into various stages of completion and variation is overwhelming when considering the amount of years he was actually recording. Everyone in music during the late 60′s and 70′s was influenced by this guy, and when he departed from this world it left a deep wound in the psyche of the world. Every single human who owned a record player in September of 1970 felt the devastating affects of hearing about the passing of Jimi Hendrix. A true advocate of peace and harmony, the weight carried forward from his body of works will always influence generations after us.

Jimi Hendrix was covering so many ideas of music and had access to the best recording studios to capture every moment. It is to the benefit of the music community in large that many of these recordings have been remastered from the 1000′s of hours of raw session tapes Hendrix accumulated in just 4 years. In honor of the 69th birthday of Jimi Hendrix, we are proud to present this mixed bag of various musical ideas Hendrix was bringing to the world in his short lifetime. These songs represent a much larger body of musical excellence and creative achievement in the highest degree. Hendrix is hands down one of most important cultural icons of the last 100 years. This mix is titled after one of my favorite poems from Hendrix, The Story of Life which we have included below. Enjoy!

“The Story of Life” by Jimi Hendrix
September 1970

The story of jesus
So easy to explain
After they crucified him,
A woman, she claimed his name
The story of jesus
The whole Bible knows
Went all across the desert
And in the middle, he found a rose

There should be no questions
There should be no lies
He was married ever happily after
All the tears we cry
No use in arguing
All the use to the man that moans
When each man falls in battle
His soul it has to roam
Angles of heaven
Flying saucers to some,
Made easter sunday
The name of the rising sun

The story is written
By so many people who dared,
To lay down the truth
To so very many who cared
To carry the cross
Of jesus and beyond
We will guide the light
This time with a woman in our arms
We as men
Can’t explain the reason why
The woman’s always mentioned
At the moment that we die
All we know
Is God is by our side,
And he says the word
So easy yet so hard

I wish not to be alone,
So I must respect my other heart
Oh, the story
Of jesus is the story
Of you and me
No use in feeling lonely,
I am searching to be free

The story
Of life is quicker
Than the wink of an eye
The story of love
Is hello and goodbye
Until we meet again

Los Angeles singer, songwriter and musician Gaby Hernandez presents an exclusive mix for Sound Colour Vibration’s online radio

November 22, 2011 1 comment

Gaby Hernandez is a Los Angeles singer, songwriter and musician who was raised in the land she lives in now. Vocally, her talents are as serene and beautiful as they come with many of her vocal additions creating some of the most blissful collaborations. The part she adds to the song ‘Long Distance‘ from Ardour, the first full length by Teebs, is incredible and stands out very distinctly from the entire set of songs that make the album. There is a nostalgia to the music that sucks you back into your memories, she has an uncanny approach to very dreamy and surreal vocals. The 2006 collaboration she did with Dimlite for the song ‘Outernational‘ is another presentation of the heavenly, angelic and powerful vocals she brings to all of her works. Her work with Mia Doi Todd on her latest full length Cosmic Ocean Ship has resulted in an official music video for Canto de Iemanjá which was originally written by Vinícius de Moraes and Baden Powell de Aquino. Gaby Hernandez has also completed and released works with her latest full length album Sweet Starry Night on Disques Corde USA/Porter Records. I caught wind of this release from Porter Records as the labels have merged. We contacted Gaby Hernandez for an exclusive mix on our online radio channel with Mixcloud and she agreed right away. This is the results of that contact, we hope you enjoy this mix as much as we do.

- Erik Otis

From Gaby: “This mix is all about my love of a great melody! The communication of emotion in all of these songs and 2 instrumentals is exalted by a great melody! The melodies speak to my heart, the words to my mind. Together they stir my soul!!

Heroes of Dub: SCV Podcasts 102

Heroes of Dub is a collection of music about the art of productions. These recording masters from the 60′s , 70′s, 80′s, and up to the time, innovated techniques for mixing, recording, vocalization, and instrumentation. The focus of these masters is placed on the steady trance inducing rhythm and the bass tone vibrations that induce a soothing feeling in one’s body and mind. This music originated in Jamaica, but came from Africa. Collected and mixed together by Cosmic Blacksmith fall of 2011.

Toronto’s 9planets releases an exclusive mix with SCV

Cover art by _lip

Toronto based producer and musician 9planets has been crafting beats for well over a decade. With his career starting in rapping, his production interests started to dominate his life the more equipment and experience he was afforded during the rising expansion of experimental electronic music. Anticon to Brainfeeder, the 90′s until now has shown a full circle of genre expansion and a complete cast of prolific artists to justify the label tags. Fast forward a decade from 9planets inception and the stages of musical growth he has encountered and you have a full time chef, owner of the new imprint/label FutureScience and a dedicated and very hard working producer. I caught wind of 9planets from friends recommendation through Beat Cinema. Beat Cinema is a very active event in Southern, CA held at the Hip Kitty Jazz Loungein Claremont, CA for beat producers. After initial contact was made, 9planets sent us this very exclusive mix of tracks of his that have never been released along with a very few released items. This is 9planets Synth Wars.

Giovanni Marks aka Subtitle drops an exclusive mix with Sound Colour Vibration (SCV Podcasts 99)

Giovanni Marks also known as Subtitle has been cross merging hip hop with different genres since the beginning of his career as an MC and producer in the 90′s. Never holding himself to one spot but always dedicated to the culture of hip hop that is his primary influence, his talents, creativity and diversity led him to be one of the few hip hop acts signed to independent label Gold Standard Laboratories. With connections from everyone in the indie and hip hop worlds, Subtitle has always blurred the genres together unlike anyone else. His time has been fruitful in the music community over the last 15 years and his new organization Brief Case Rockers is a collective that shows the results of all of this hard work. Comprised of like minded musicians, artists, film makers and so much more, Briefcase Rockers will surely be around for a long time to come.

Giovanni Marks spent a lot of time in Europe the last few years and has come back to live in his native region of Los Angeles this year. It was only right that Low End Theory welcomed him back home with a headlining performance. You always get something a little new at Low End and it was no different for Subtitles performance. If you don’t own any records from Subtitle, I highly recommend checking out Terrain To Roam (Alpha Pup Records). The 2006 full length release has production from Madlib, Dntel, Daddy Kev, Paris Zax, Nobody, Omid, Thavius Beck, Daedelus, Small Is Beautiful, Crunc Tesla and others. Owning a copy is a must.

We contacted Giovanni earlier this year right before he came back to the the States to take part in our music podcast series. He graciously accepted and got us this very extensive and heavily edited digital mixtape with speed. We decided to wait on this release as we wanted to schedule it around the time our other guests who have agreed started to submit their mixes. This mix covers the full range of sound, from ambient/noise to super pop. Music cultures are bridging more and more in these times and this mix shows how this new age is fostering a different approach to breaking down walls that existed in large before the 21st century. Now Madonna can be on a mix with Sun Ra; a merge we welcome with open arms. Giovanni is a musician who is as seasoned, creative and talented as any producer or MC out today, so please enjoy this mix that he has given the world to enjoy for free.
