Villian (1971) & Sitting Target (1972)
@ The Spectacle Theatre, Brooklyn NY

Tuesday August 23rd: FINDERS KEEPERS DOUBLE FEATURE MOVIE NIGHT AT SPECTACLE THEATER
With screenings of Villian & Sitting Target both starring Ian Mcshane!
Spectacle Theater 7PM & 9PM – 124 South 3rd St Brooklyn NY 11211 Facebook event page
On August 23rd Finders Keepers hosts a British crime thriller night with Sitting Target and Villain, both starring Ian Mcshane!
Alongside the recently resurrected (but previously unreleased) seminal scores for ‘The Wickerman’, ‘Deathline’ and ‘Psychomania’, STANLEY MYERS’ ‘SITTING TARGET’ is another UK thriller soundtrack that has sat in the proverbial ‘can’ for over 30 years while cinematic sonic-enthusiasts have had to make do …with homemade bootlegs taped from second generation video tapes in hope of soundtrack amnesty. After composing ‘groovy-movie’ music for films such as ‘Otley’ and ‘No Way To Treat A Lady’, the ‘Deer Hunter’ axe-meister brings us his most forward thinking fuzzed-out-orchestratral-proto-hip-hop score to date (albeit three decades late).
Maestro Myers provides the brooding soundscapes for the first-ever R-Rated British movie which saw Lovejoy’s IAN MCSHANE accompany the animalistic OLIVER REED on a Pentonville escape mission fuelled by a bleeding heart, a gallon of red mist and a diabolical lust for revenge.

DJ Nobody and Gaslamp Killer got the speakers buzzing Wednesday night. Gaslamp Killer’s taste in music is definitely free-range. A strange mix of Beatles and spaghetti western bass, 808 thump and B-movies, Ozzie classics and xXx. Not to mention world music from Istanbul and ‘No Quarter’ from Tool and a little brand new Hudson Mohawke. “This is Low End Theory,” he announces to a screaming house.
Daddy Kev then rocked out some new Jonwayne before D-Styles took to the stage. D-Styles is incredible and smooth with quick mixes. I do believe I heard a little ‘Trouble On My Mind’ and some Bassnectar.
dirtRAID came on and got real raw. Straight from the monitor, crunchy filth personified. It must take some talent to make such objects sound so good.
DJ Nobody’s set was preceded by an announcement from Nocando that someone was about to get pregnant. The cuts were slick, the breaks were head-bangable. I heard a little Weeknd and a little Drake so the pregnancy rumors were perhaps true; that’s real baby-making music right there.
Mike Eagle definitely makes you think with his lyrics (“I bend the same laws that put a monkey on the moon”) but he also has some treats for the common man striving for success (“High IQ but no credit score”). The ‘Party People Get a Chorus’ and ‘Pop Culture’ is represented with an Aqua-Teen Hunger Force reference. I like his music because I have to listen to it again and again, it’s crafted that well to demand it.
Then Daddy Kev came at us again, select cuts and precise slices dazzling the ear. I think he got the biggest rise of the night from the crowd with his signature slinging of digital aggregate. Summoning sounds out of an iPad, he rocked back and forth like I imagine Hendrix would with a guitar. He even brought a little classic rock sound to the party when he cut into The Entrance Bands ‘Grim Reaper Blues‘ for a little bit, which was a personal highlight for me. The Entrance Band + Daddy Kev = Madness.
Mux Mool should make movie soundtracks as his pacing is incredible. His set was a performance as opposed to fitting as many fist raising anthems into his time slot as possible. But when he is ready for it to hit, he lets it hit hard.
After that, Gaslamp Killer came back with more of his eclectic selections, but we shouldn’t have been surprised because he warned us via twitter earlier in the day. Gaslamp Killer was still up there destroying it with NoCanDo when I had to jet out. Select clips from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ”Holy Mountain” played on the projector screen as as my sweat solidified in the cool Los Angeles air. – Oliver Walker

Live At The Casbah San Diego
Opening for Earthless
July 2nd, 2011
From Brian Ellis:
3 days before this I was rehearsing with ASTRA, getting ready to play this show which would have been our first San Diego show in at least a year. We had just finished our final week of tracking at Big Fish Studios for our new album “The Black Chord” and were going to debut a slew of new songs at this gig, opening up for Earthless. But as luck would have it, Richard came down with a severe case of Bronchitis and would be unable to perform. He is a very integral part of ASTRA and there would be no real way to play our songs without him, so we had to figure out what to do quick, it being only 2 days away from the show.
I had just played my debut concert with my new group “Brian Ellis Group” the previous weekend at the Tin Can Alehouse and I suggested that we could fill in the spot. We all agreed that was the best option, and I asked Conor Riley of ASTRA to join in on Organ and Minimoog, rounding out the group with 3 members of ASTRA (David Hurley plays percussion). It was a major bummer not be able to play with ASTRA and debut our new material, but this was a great opportunity for my brand new group to play in front of a great sold out show that we would have otherwise never have been able to get on.
I started Brian Ellis Group as an outlet to play more improvised/psychedelic/fusion in the same vein as my solo albums I have released since 2007 (The Silver Creature, Free Way, and Quipu). I have always wanted to put together a band to perform that music, but it really requires the right musicians all being on the same page. Through all the bands I’ve played in throughout the past few years I’ve finally met all the right people, and I’m really excited to do many more shows with this group.

Live musical performance by Luca Forcucci and Michael Kott Performance, May 5, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts 3834 Main Street Riverside, CA 92501 Tel: (951) 827-3755
Teatro Dello Spirito is a live musical collaboration between sound composer Luca Forcucci and trans-galactic cellist Michael Kott, whose group is called 2 humans & The Cosmos. The duo performs by integrating found sounds recorded from the Amazon forest, abandoned coal mines or urban environments, with hyper-intergalactic cello and brainwave interfaces. Their style pushes the boundaries of electroacoustic music by an integration of improvisation techniques.
The performance explores ways of interacting with soundscapes, field recording and musicians. In this context, the notation of the work resides in the listening act between the performers and therefore the surrounding reactive environment to the performance. This consideration reflects issues from the artist Pauline Oliveros with her careful sonic observation through ‘deep listening’ technique, John Cage’s ideas that emanate from nature and sound environment or the French philosopher Roland Barthes, who stated, in an essay entitled ‘Listening,’ that hearing is a physiological phenomenon; listening is psychological act.
About the Artists: Luca Forcucci is a sound artist. His research focuses on the sonic properties and the perception of architectural spaces, immaterial architectures, digital and natural environments. His work is presented on a regular basis in Europe, USA and Brazil. His last record is released in 2011 by the Belgian label SUBROSA.
He has worked with sound in many artistic fields and with several artists like independent media choreographer Johannes Birringer, Francisco Lopez for recordings in the Amazon forest or Al Comet from the band the Young Gods.
Transgalactic electro-cellist Michael Kott has been rocking the cello since tender age of nine. Of his musical influences he says, “there are many… not all from music per se… the motion of a fish or a bird of prey…call forth emotions and stories…the visual and the aural become one…”
A cellist and composer who has worked with artists such as Mark O’Connor, Robert Mirabal, Peter Buffett, and Victor Wooten – writing two of the songs on Victor’s Grammy nominated album Yin Yang. Michael has been known to perform playing cello and singing while riding a skateboard, and continues to travel the world bringing the vibration of the cello to new audiences around the world.
From the organizer of this event, Soniafierce Bastidas:
We are encouraging people to bring 3d glasses for this special and unique presentation. We’re going to trick out the place as much as we can complete with optical illusions posters on the walls. Part of this was inspired by Michel Gondry and his work. The stage will be flooded w/ blacklights and we are encouraging bands to wear glow in the dark. We will bring the body paint. =). We are also going to have some simple workshop(s), one of which will be dripping paint in a circular motion on paper to make fun art to take home. And we are also going to have soyrizo tacos and tofu ceviche for sale. Thanks and we hope to meet as many of you as possible.

Linocuts are very similar to woodcuts. It is a printing method using a sheet of linoleum, in which a subtractive cutting method is used. By cutting the linoleum you leave a drawing in relief. This results in a linocut that can reproduce the same image over and over again.

Bakersfield, CA doesn’t come to mind when one thinks of upcoming artists. Out of this region has come MONO/POLY, complete with some of the fattest synth tones, organic soundscapes, dubstep and the type of blending that all of the artists in Brainfeeder do so well. The Brainfeeder family is putting out some of the most progressive electronic music out today and it truly is a beautiful ride the label is taking us on. Manifestations, the latest creation to come forth from MONO/POLY will prove to be no exception to the rule for high quality releases in the labels catalogue. MONO/POLY will be performing at the Hip Kitty Jazz Lounge in Claremont, CA, below are full details. ~ Erik Otis

At these two performances in Los Angeles, Adrian will have copies of “El Hombre De la camara”, the live album covered in this article along with his first outing with his EL REGIMEN Collective “Cu Taan”, which can also be purchased through Amoeba Records.
Now we present news on a recent live album that includes Adrian Terrazas-Gonzalez and many other leading musicians in the evolving circuits of trained, seasoned and unique musicians who bridge the experimental and traditional aspects of music with a high sense of discipline. The setting for this live album is that of soundtrack music for a famous experimental Russian movie from the 20′s called Man With A Movie Camera. The film was highly controversial, now when put in its historical context is a must needed expansion of film possibilities and ideas. Pushing boundaries, it presents for a wild ride in the soundtrack area and all the musicians on this recording are highly skilled, so they really flourish in all these possibilities. According to Wikipedia, there are a large amount of innovative aspects to this movie, “This film is famous for the range of cinematic techniques Vertov invents, deploys or develops, such as double exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, stop motion animations and a self-reflexive style.”
With the movies tone and setting now in place, it is easy to understand why this music shifts in so many ranges and how the tracks are so short yet so full of life and contrasting colors and ideas. Not contrasting in the sense of colliding and creating confusing notes but more so in the sense of creating a world of sound as unique, colorful and surprising as is found on this recording. Adrian Terrazas is one of those musicians where his tenor in Mars Volta led him to many pockets of this world. With a deep understanding of the traditions before him and this expanded fusion of rock, prog and other elements foreign to his upbringing, he has really expanded his creative outlook and this recording shows that. Bass Clarinet resonates deeply into the sound spectrum like a flight of thousands of cars pounding down a highway, you really feel how heavy his contribution adds to the overall pieces involved.
Alex Otaola is the leader of this effort and this recording was captured in July of 2009 under his direction. A rising guitarist among other instruments, this is a very impressive effort by him and many leading musicians around him that he included for this effort. My favorite tracks are Sport Milli, Dziga, 8 1/2 and Regreso del Hijo. Below is a track listing, link to download the album and the personal on this live date. The engineer, band and everyone involved really make for a solid recording, and the music speaks for itself, don’t miss out on this.

Show 3: Scion Metal Show
Chicago, IL (1/8/11)
Reggie’s Rock Club
Bands: Trap Them, Black Breath, and Mammoth Grinder.
I found out about this show at the very last minute but I was able to get ahold of Steve (Bassist-Trap Them) and get a photo pass for the show. This show ruled for so many reasons. It was an awesome line up at a really solid venue and most importantly the car company Scion didn’t charge for admission,
First up was Mammoth Grinder. I had not heard much about the band except for the fact that they were super heavy and were on the label Southern Lord. So I figured I’d give them a chance. While they didn’t exactly fit into my taste of music they had some sick riffs and sounded really solid. Next up was Black Breath. I had never had the privilege of seeing BB before and I attribute some of my favorite break downs to the album “Heavy Breathing.” Their set was full of ridiculous guitar riffs and the head bangs were plentiful. Awesome set.
Finally, the headliners, Trap Them took the stage. I had seen them a few weeks prior with Every Time I Die in a 200 person venue in Chicago. Honestly one of my favorite shows of 2010 and easily the wildest show I’ve been to in a long time. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Trap Them stole the show hands down and I can easily say that their upcoming full length release in 2011 will be my album of the year.
Show 4: Native Tour Send Off
Valparaiso, IN (1/16/11)
Blackbird Cafe
Bands: Native, In The Face Of War and Brighter Arrows
Brighter Arrows played first. I was thrilled to finally see this band. It features members of Lautrec, Mans, Stay Ahead of the Weather and Phoenix Bodies. They seriously killed it. One of the best new bands I’ve had the honor of watching in the past few months. This band is a power house and I expect awesome things from them. The second band to play was another band that I was seeing for the first time. In The Face Of War destroyed Valparaiso. Awesome band and I’m super bummed that there last show is scheduled for a few months from now. It’s a shame to see another big hardcore band dismantle, but their last show will be one for the books.
Native dropped two new songs at the show both were fucking awesome. I took a video for one song tentatively called “Monday Night Football” Check it out here:
Forgive the sound quality. This band is punishing.
Show 5: Guster and Good Old War
Chicago, IL (1/29/11)
The Riviera Theatre
Bands: Guster and Good Old War
It was awesome to see and shoot for the Good Old War boys again. They always put on an awesome show and are definitely some of the most talented singers that I’ve heard. They played a few new jams that I hadn’t heard yet and I was honestly really impressed with them. As far as Guster goes, I’ve never really been a big fan except for that one song that was in the movie “Wedding Crashers.” However, it was awesome to shoot them and I’m stoked with how the pictures turned out.
