Mati Klarwein’s “Grain of Sand” Painting from 1963-65 | CiM 270
One of the strongest visionaries in the 20th century is without a doubt Mati Klarwein . His talents have touched every pocket of music / art culture and far beyond, culminating in one of the most uncompromising paths in 20th century arts. In the 60′s, Mati was creating some of his most impressive and extensive works. “Grain of Sand” has become one of his most admired pieces in his non album art collection from this era and it feels like we will always cherish this piece of art. “Grain of Sand” was created over the course of a few years, initially finding the first brush strokes in 1963 and seeing completion in 1965. It’s a mind blowing creation that is revealed to even more impressive states with the examination of each quadrant and the contents found within.

For a long time I had wanted to paint a picture that you could hang up on a wall any which way, a rotating universe with no ups or downs. I projected it as a sort of painted musical comedy movie with a sanskrit swinging cast of thousands, starring Marilyn Monroe, Anita Ekberg, Ray Charles, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Roland Kirk, Cannonball Adderly, Ahmed Abdul Malik, Wonderwoman, Delacroix’s girl in the cemetry, Litri and his bullshit fighters, Florence of Arabia, Socrates, Dali, Rama, Vishnu, Ganesh, the Zork and a Milky Way of playmates. It was 1962 and I had a special crush on Marilyn.
The inner circle is a mirror image of the outer. This painting featured in the 2007 ‘Summer of Love’ exhibition, organised by the Tate Liverpool, which also visited the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The title is a reference to Blake:
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

German visionary Max Ernst had his hand in everything during his 80+ years in this world. Painting, sculpting, poetry, graphic design, there were many areas of his creative eye that really spoke of a vision far ahead of its time. To stare into the works he was creating in the 1920′s is proof of this time portal into the future, pre-dating many of the landmark pieces of art that have captured the identity of surrealism with most of the public. Max Ernst created “Oedipus Rex” in 1922, a period that would reflect the Dada movement that was occurring all around him and his deep foundations into collage work. The works of Ernst in the 20′s remain legendary and we will be looking at many of these works this year. Dimensions: 93 x 102 cm

Michael Shapcott (born June 6, 1982 in Hartford, Connecticut) is a Central Connecticut-based painter, known for his daring color palette and emotionally charged portraits. His work deals with highly detailed graphite underdrawings which he then paints with colorful washes in oil and acrylic paints. In addition to painting, Shapcott creates art videos that track the process of painting a painting and show his unique style of working.
Shapcott studied illustration for two years before switching to fine arts for the remainder of his studies at Paier College of Art in Hamden, Connecticut, graduating in 2007 with a diploma in Fine Arts. He credits his education for basic technical experience but feels that only in breaking some of the traditional methods he was taught and experimenting on his own did he develop the confidence, unique voice and style he continues to expand upon today.

Rick Rodriguez live painting from Joshua Tree Music Festival, May 2013 | CiM 267
Inland Empire’s Rick Rodriguez has been a constant staple of the regions artistic creative window, creating multifaceted themes of light and darkness through the medium of paint that sheds light on the duality of his formal training through Cal Arts and the street life that almost consumed his way of being. His paintings are an emotional representation of society on many levels, giving his art the standing chance to transcend time and relate to any pocket of time and generation. Rick Rodriguez took part in a live painting session at this years Joshua Tree Music Festival and has released the following photo of his completed works via Facebook. Also, check out a visual project from Rick’s archives that we absolutely love. Captured in 2011 on a private beach in Baja, Rick Rodriguez constructed installation art on the beach and set the projects to flame. Everything was filmed with a stand in camera and edited in a time lapse of the entire course it ran. An exhilarating moment of art by one of our favorite painters.
This particular project was one of my biggest and most personal art installations I have ever undertaken. Gathering found object on the beach of Ensenada Baja California Mexico, it took me two days to complete and only a few minutes to destroy. Watch and enjoy! Gracias – Rick Rodriguez

Storm Thorgerson’s Dark Side 40 Cover Series | CiM 259
The Pink Floyd camp is rolling out the red carpet for the 40th anniversary of the landmark LP Dark Side of The Moon. The recent Immersion Box set on Dark Side has become a critically acclaimed piece of history in the 21st century and it truly feels like the album only gets better with time. To commemorate this special 40th anniversary of the groups most respected works, Pink Floyd and their trusted team have pulled imagery out of the archives that Storm Thorgerson created as conceptual deviations to the original work he completed for the band on the cover of Dark Side of The Moon. 15 images have been released so far from a panel that includes 49 spaces. Porter Records was born in 2005 out of a love for crate digging in the basements of record shops. Porter’s founder, Luke Mosling, has a talent for finding the obscure, beautiful and strange recordings that may have previously gone unheard by a larger audience. This talent started the reissue portion of the Porter Records catalog.
When doing reissues, Porter works hard at creating strong relationships with the original artists or their estates. This allows Porter to respect not only the original vision of the artist and their recordings, but also to respect the vision the artist has for the future. Porter’s goal is to make these reissues more widely known and recognized as important pieces of art within their respected genres.
