Barış Manço “Dünden Bugüne” | Guerssen Records

The beautiful essence of Turkish experimental music is unparalleled. To give it a true defining characteristic would be impossible outside of the spiritual and deep meditative calling to the culture of those who create in its region. After finding the works of Erkin Koray, I have been on a journey to unearth more of the sounds that comprise the adventurous explorers in the regions music community. This is music of another age and something I feel this generation will consume when presented with how good it really is.

In my research with 60′s and 70′s Turkish music, a name has always come up that I have yet to do the proper research on: Barış Manço. That changed this year when I got a new record for review from his illustrious career. He is an international star and has been loved by his people since he took the scene by storm in 1970 with the single Dağlar Dağlar. He would eventually release the full length Dünden Bugüne in 1972 and this is the album that would solidify his presence as one of the proponents of Turkish psych music. Dünden Bugüne is a record that shocks me every time I hear it and it’s a wonderful treat that the label Guerrsen Records has given this record new life this year with an overdue reissue. The people making music today have a lot to live up to when records like this are reissued back into the world.

Don’t hesitate to check out the type of releases Guerrsen Records is putting into the world, definitely one of the best in the reissues that are coming out from all over the globe. The label also reissued the second and third full lengths from Barış Manço in 2023 (1975) and Sakla Samani, Gelir Zamani (1976).

Barış Manço was one of the leading, most influential and most beloved Turkish rock musicians, along with Erkin Koray, Edip Akbayram and Cem Karaca, and this is his first long-player, released in 1971 by Sayan Productions. It’s a compilation of tracks taken from previously-released 45s, plus the track “Lory” that only appears on this album. Killer psych-rock with a strong Turkish flavor, this features Baris’ all-time classics like “Derule” and “Dağlar Dağlar I,” as well as the brutal, wah-wah flooded “Küçük Bir Gece Müzigi,” with its infectious drumming that drives anyone searching for sampling stuff mad. Not to be confused with two different releases with the same name that actually have different tracklistings and artwork, this is the real album as it was originally released and the first legit CD reissue. Also includes a booklet with great photos of Barış and extensive liner notes.
