Okayplayer has relaunched their record label this year with the digital only imprint Okayplayer Records. The first release to appear this year from the reprised label is the third long player from producer and MC Danny! titled Payback. As a multi-styled and gifted lyricist with a just as accomplished range of production under his belt, he has created a record that is all his own and is a crowning achievement in modern hip hop.

EL-P, Joey Bad A$$, Del, Lil B, Nas, Jeremiah Jae, Doseone; the list goes on for evolutionary torch runners in the world of hip hop and Danny! is an artist who has taken residence in this list of people bringing real hip hop back to the world. His latest record is his best yet and surpasses many rap records out right now and gives enough homage to the past that it doesn’t alienate itself from the foundations. If you consider yourself a hip hop head, this record was made for you. When many artists are consumed by the digital age and are making records without soul, Payback drips with soul every moment. The production for his latest release was handled solely by himself and show a producer whose pallet stretches far beyond the genre he creates in. The bass still rides heavy in the midst of the elegant and organic melodies though, there’s no mistake where the music belongs in terms of genre.

I feel Danny! has summarized a body of hip hop that goes far beyond geographical residence or any specific style. One song sounds like a classic underground Souls of Mischief track and the next sounds like Timbaland was the source of influence. Samples pull from many different eras, always leaving you on your toes when submerged inside of the record.

Payback is among most forward thinking hip hop records released this year. Featuring Res, Lil B, EL-P, ?uestlove, Swizz Beatz and many more forward thinking artists, this record is a dream come true as I can’t believe this type of sound is back in hip hop. I truly get lost in a beautiful vibe when I hear the lyrical approach and beat making techniques of Danny! It’s because of albums like Payback that hip hop elevates even higher than anyone could have imagined. Remember the name Danny!, this is what hip hop is all about.
