John Cage “In Love with a Coca-Cola Bottle” | SCV Podcasts 138

Mixed and compiled by Ramzi Jamal Shalabi

John Cage was an avant-garde composer and zen philosopher in the mid-to-late 20th century. Better known for his more novel performance acts, things like coming out on stage and eating an apple into the microphone and having that be the performance and then just walking off stage, or also his composition of 4′ 33”, four and a half minutes of supposed silence. To most people this may seem like lazy composing, on the contrary, Mr Cage actually had an artistic statement to share, he wanted to get us to listen, to really listen. For him, sound alone was interesting enough, it didn’t need to be this or that kind of sound. In this podcast you hear him tell stories while accompanied with a spasmodic collage of his compositions. All layering was done quick and in the spirit of letting connections be left to chance, the way he would’ve liked it I think.
