Void Pedal “Pair of L” | Fieldwerk Recordings

Chicago hip hop beat producer Void Pedal has entered my life with his Pair of L EP on Fieldwerk Recordings. As a free EP digital only release, Pair of L shines on the most stunning level and leaves room for some of the heaviest drum breaks on anything released this year. Snare and hi-hat never sounded this in your face and alive as they do on Pair of L. Characteristically hip hop in almost every way, Void Pedal finds a way to stretch the limitations of that genre and relies on an atmospheric meshing of deep sonic layers that stirs up something in which speaks of an artist with a big pallet for music types.

With how hard the beats ride on Pair of L, there is always room for a blissful resonance that captures the mind in the most unrestrained ways. Samples drop into the mix like a bomb raid, all the while opening up new transitions that take the track even higher. Only hip hop can make you feel as raw, encumbered and wild as something like Pair of L with that deep spiritual language of music that can be traced back since recordings have been possible. You could even say this album is meditative in its melodic voicing with how each song drips with emotional resistance to the norm. The bass and drum kit sounds plant the album into a decade before now, a time when neck breaking beats were a must for any producer to get any love.

Instrumental hip hop has become such an influential model of expression in beat music that producers like Void Pedal have what seems like an endless bag of styles and modes to pull from. Pair of L feels like an apex of the catalysts initialized decades before and will ride hard in any system, regardless of the size of your speaker set up. The beats are just that good, it really doesn’t matter what you got. With really tight and smooth arrangements under the ferocious drum beaks, each track flows seamlessly to the next with as much power and gust as it has light and beauty.

Imagine the rawest break beats over synthetic gardens of mental bliss and you can begin to invision what Void Pedal has brought to the world on Pair of L. The evolution of hip hop is alive and well on Pair of L.
