Sonnymoon “Sonnymoon” | Plug Reseach

Sonnymoon is in full speed now, releasing their self titled full length this year with an atmospheric cosmic voyage at the heart of the experimental electronica scene. With the seven track 2012 EP released earlier this year, the duo of Sonnymoon have shot into the public sphere in a rather forceful way. Some could say this blast of new music from the group this year isright on time, we feel it’s more ahead of time. Sonnymoon’s debut full length is on the same label that launched their 2012 EP, Plug Research. The diversity of Sonnymoon becomes enlarged in an unraveling, time traveling state. Instrumentation is stretched to its fragmenting limits, dripped in electronic psychedelic and a really potent arrangements of colors through sound. Ultimately, this album becomes as relaxing as it is grand in scope and infinite in imaginative.

Experimental electronic artists are collectively bringing a new pathway to sound and Sonnymoon is one of the most translucent and psychedelic of the entire grouping of artists in this movement. A song like “Infinity” includes a drawn out and spacey sitar passages that blends marvelously within the electronic field of sounds. Rotary movement in synth and a shifting catacomb of keys and further electronics and the album shatters into dense areas of emotions. Poetic reasoning becomes as how the words are used, adding a mystic that only a certain type of singer can add. The vocals are interjected softly over all of the melody sequences, constantly blending with the music in a way that allows her swells to rise so far up.

For my tastes, the soulful hypnotic aura of the album glows with the strongest intensity in the piece “Kali”. As a jazz tinged vocal and bass heavy song, it shines with a natural beautiful radiance that reminds me of my favorite summers in my younger years. This sounds like an outtake from The Mis Educaton of Lauryn Hill, giving a fluid and organic symbiosis with the cosmic space age. “Kali” breathes in tones that sound so good on contact.

As each track unfolds, a new story and completely new identity emerges. There is never a song on the album that remotely sounds close to the next, making the album hard to pen down and trace a path from beginning to end. This adventurous setting of different ideas through each song is something I love about this record a lot considering how well connected the flow of the album feels.

Sonnymoon are a group whose path stretches into far deeper doorways than the music itself. Connecting to the knowledge of our celestial state in harmonic frequency, Sonnymoon’s debut album is an album of soothing music that I really feel is the type of sound that is needed in a world of full of stress, hardship and destruction.
