The Bombay Royale “You Me Bullets Love” HopeStreet Recordings
Australia’s The Bombay Royale hit with their debut, “You Me Bullets Love”. Just as their webpage says, it is about“…romance, kidnapping, kungfu-fighting, short-shorts and a maiden in distress.” It is, indeed, a “…surfadelic roller-coaster.”
What began as a band doing covers of Bollywood tracks they loved turned into a full-on project of original music inspired by Bollywood. Listening to “You Me Bullets Love” is like dropping acid, waking up in the Bollywood version of “Reservoir Dogs” all cast in Melbourne. There is a collision of interests on this record and they all seem to bond together very well considering that Bollywood’s music from the 60’s and 70’s incorporated similar themes to what is an acid drenched Tarantino film. The magic, the mysticism is presented in all of its cultural awesomeness. The cornier elements of surf and Bollywood are also present, even if the record music wise is a serious listen. The guitar work and its synchronization with the drums are absolutely incredible. Rhythmic bursts of orgasmic strumming against the constant phasing and wah-wah. The ride doesn’t ever slow down. You cannot help but dance and wave your hands around while listening to “Me Bullets Love”.
When “The Mysterious Lady” (Parvyn Kaur Singh) sings in English, it comes as a surprise. The languages all have their own special place throughout the recordings. The saxophone produced by the omnipresent “Skipper” (Andy Williamson) washes over the vocals and adds all of the suspense to the audio movie presented. Bassist and composer “Boatswain” (Bob Knob) keeps the rolling disco drilling throughout the colorful stomps and sways.
If you close your eyes while listening to “You Me Bullets Love” you might indeed feel like some sort of kamikaze psychedelic assassin is chasing you and is after your beloved. Essentially, that is what the experience brings. It really is a very enjoyable record and something I would personally love to see in person. I just wonder if I would have to bring a mask, gun, short white shorts and a briefcase full of exotic gems to the show.
