Movement Nu 24: Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Pusher”
Pusher is a film that bolted a once-23 year-old Nicolas Winding Refn into international acclaim, a true rags-to-riches journey taken by a fine auteur. It is one of the grittiest films that we at SCV have ever seen. The film is exactly what its title suggests, a story about drug dealers, losers, abusers and how they get around in the streets of Denmark.
What we at SCV found most captivating about the making of Pusher is the use of nonactors, actual drug dealers and gangsters that film maker Nic Refn met and found on the streets. The photography in this film was bold enough to imprint a trademark that all Refn films take from, a sort-of perfect blueprint, if you will. The acting in the film is so menacing and honest that you would think these were actual students of the theatre, real actors. SCV strongly suggests this timeless gangster picture which incorporates the “real world” in a bold and intellectual manner.
