Color in Motion Vol 143: Sonny Kay’s latest album cover art for The Mars Volta’s forthcoming album Noctourniquet
When it comes to album covers, the now decade old progressive, punk, latin, fusion and rock band The Mars Volta have embarked on a provocative and thought provoking mission to present some of the best ocular introductions to their albums. For anyone who is still into absorbing a new record with album art, notes and the rest held with as much importance as the music itself, The Mars Volta have enlisted the talents of the best to ensure that all of the extra details are in perfect order. Prolific artist Storm Thorgerson, who was responsible for many of Pink Floyd’s monumental releases, presented the bands covers for the first 5 years of the groups existence. Surrealist painter Jeff Jordan took over duties for all of their releases after Storm stopped working with the band.
Now we find visual collage artist and digital manipulator Sonny Kay extending beyond the work he has done with The Mars Volta world to handle an album cover design. If you have seen any of their performances with the illustrious backdrops that go well far beyond a tag of psychedelic, than you don’t need any intro to what Sonny’s work do to the overall aesthetic of a bands works. Sonny Kay has worked with The Mars Volta’s leader Omar Rodriguez-Lopez extensively over the last 2 decades in various incarnations and the latest works for Omar and his megalithic group The Mars Volta is quite possibly one of his most minimalistic pieces to date. The Mars Volta have plans to release their latest LP Noctourniquet on March 27, 2012 through Warner Bros. We have included images below for a few of the LP’s Sonny Kay has created for Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Sonny Kay is one of our favorite artists, it’s a surreal feeling to see his legacy in motion.
