Free The Robots “The Mind’s Eye”

Free The Robots

“The Mind’s Eye”
Alpha Pup Records
2011

The Mind’s Eye EP is the latest effort by rhythm crucifier, Free the Robots. Some may say it has a very spastic sound to it. Others may say it is wild and chaotic, while portraying many different ideas coming from all directions. The cruel, bumping basslines are thrown at the listener in a very organic manner. It is evident with these tracks that Free the Robots gives a faithful and respectful homage to the percussion patterns of cats such as Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, maybe even Oizo.

The extremely clean synth transitions also add to the heightened sense of euphoria one may encounter while listening to The Mind’s Eye. The samples used on this record bring a strong vision to the already potent rhythms that this album delivers. It is safe to say that Free the Robots can do no wrong, and this step in evolution is something very gratifying for everyone in the world.

2007 saw the beginning of Free The Robots musical output. 2007 included his first EP and what would be the first half of his first full length that was released in 2008. The 2008 pressing has contributions from The Gaslamp Killer and Phil Nisco and was pressed on the independent Japanese label Easel. These two releases gathered immediate attention from the electronic world and Gaslamp Killer and Free The Robots created The Killer Robots for an online only release with Obey Records.

2008 was a good year for Free The Robots and would ultimately launch him into releasing records with the prestigious Alpha Pup label, tours around the world, many mixes, remixes and has now taken part in the All City Records split series with Exile this year. Clt Alt Dlt was the chaotic masterpiece that resulted in this new relationship with Alpha Pup, his new restaurant The Crosby, spiritual awakening, personal destruction and regrowth and so many other elements of his life at that point.

“The Mind’s Eye” is in our opinions, the calming of that initial storm and the settling creative lifeline that has now been bridged under his musings. DJ turned beat maker and beat maker turned composer. Free The Robots has shown a constant ferocious tenacity for touring with a professional level work ethic that has carried his sound to dimensions past his previous efforts. His sound has continued to grow since 2007.

“The Mind’s Eye” feels like the expansion and joy of a spirit with boundless leaps of musical progress achieved. Constructed in a highly advanced yet easily accessible form, this new EP can be digested just as easily on the dance floors just as much as it can with headphones.
