Movement Nu 18: Paul Thomas Anderson’s Sydney

Movement Nu 18

Sydney [Hard Eight]
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
1996

Sydney is the first film that auteur Paul Thomas Anderson ever made. It is truly a finely toned film about the duality of inconvenient circumstance. It is also somewhat of a gambler’s coming of age story set in Atlantic City, NJ. Having said that, the story starts out with a homeless man sitting outside of a cafe wallowing in his pity. A seemingly rich man approaches the sitting homeless man and asks him if he wants a cup of coffee. From then on, a tremendous story of deceit and vengeance is told through the modernistic setting of present-day Atlantic City.

There is something about this debut effort from PTA that enthralls the viewer from start to finish. The relationships that are examined in this gripping dark drama are showcased in a very delicate matter. Every single character in the PT Anderson films have subtle relationships with one another. That is something that I look forward to seeing whenever I sit down to watch one of his films. -PGA
