Stop and Smell The Colors Vol. 1: Ultimate Spinach “Mind Flowers”

This series saw a slight delay but is back up and we have compiled many posts in this series for release. This is the first which was posted here a month or two ago, we wanted to repost the first article to introduce the series properly. These posts are going to get heavy if you are into the psyche world of 60′s and 70′s music. ~ Erik Otis

Stop and Smell the Colors Volume 1

Welcome to Stop and Smell the Colors, and the first of many posts to come! This series will focus on songs that are true mindfucks and that really take you to another level of musical appreciation. Hopefully by the time you finish each track you will feel as if you have been taken through the depths of “your troubled mind” and seen the metamorphosis of internal perception.

To start off this journey into the profoundness of psychedelia we are going to take a look at a song from the Boston based psych band, Ultimate Spinach. “Mind Flowers” is included on their second album Behold and See which is my favorite of the first two albums and worth a listen if you enjoy this song. This is the song that after first hearing a few years ago had me craving for other sounds like it and really brought me deeper in love with psych. It almost sounds like the thin line between sanity and insanity and by the end you find only insanity.

Ultimate Spinach incorporated the musical talents of Ian Bruce-Douglas & Barbara Hudson as well as various session musicians including Jeff Baxter who later worked with Steely Dan & The Doobie Brothers. Their first two records are some what overlooked gems from the 60′s. ~ James A & Jessica W

Expect a lot more posts in the future from this series!
