Theo Ellsworth is a self taught artist living in Portland, Oregon. He is currently writing and drawing a comic book called the Quiet Family, and working on pieces for an upcoming solo show at the Giant Robot Gallery in Los Angeles, opening November 2010. His first Graphic Novel, Capacity was published by Secret Acres in 2008 and named one of the best comics of the year by the Village Voice. Capacity is over 300 pages of original works and is already in its second print. “Intricate, even exquisite – but never immaculate, Theo Ellsworth’s Capacity is a mind turned inside out. Ellsworth’s careful line gives shape to profound and profoundly silly thoughts alike, bringing a visionary, startling new life to the doubts and hopes that are so familiar to everyone.” A story from his newest comic, Sleeper Car, was chosen for the upcoming Best American Comics Anthology 2010, edited by Neil Gaimen. He recently provided album art for the new Flying Lotus release, Pattern + Grid World. He lives with his wife and their cat. I found his works because of the new Flying Lotus cover art and I’m very pleased he got back to us so quickly to present many of his works here in our Creator Wave series. Enjoy

This is awesome! His work is gorgeous: has elements of Pshaw, Jim Woodring, and many other experimental comix artists. It’s always amazing when you find an artist that creates whole worlds of life and experience within their art. I just picked up “Capacity” and started reading it. It’s complex. You could teach a university lecture with it. I’m always amazed that this kind of contemporary comix work isn’t well-known by a wider part of society. Thanks for the tip-off to this amazing artist.
Thanks for checking this out, we appreciate the feedback :)
