A new revolution in Brazilian sound: MDM (2010)

MDM is a new age frontier into the world of Brazilian music. Experimental yet rooted in a deep foundation of native rhythms, beats and harmonies from Brazil, this pushes the limits of fusion as much Arthur Verocai, Os Mutantes and others before them that changed South American music. Lush overtones create the perfect atmosphere for each song. From extreme noise bits to marvelous piano and violin driven sections, they cover the full spectrum of emotion on this record. You feel every interval and its impact upon the record and the way it shifts where you are at. Godspeed type of riffs come in over blasted out noise frequencies than all drains into a groove based african sounding section. The amount of different electronic and acoustic tones used throughout makes you think you are inside an album birthed in Brazil by Os Mutantes and Mars Volta yet something completely its own.

Mario Cappi is the brain child behind this body of work and along with him he has brought a cast that brought his vision to the forefront and into your ears. When I first caught wind of this group after they had contacted me I was instantly mesmerized. Funky latin break beats covered in rained out synthetic bliss, there’s lots of character and tradition set inside the newer sounding modes they play on. MDM and the members involved in this project come from the Hurtmold family who has put out a split with Chicago’s own The Eternals. This collective of musicians is thriving in a completely unified way, pushing themselves with genre defying release after release.

One of my favorite tracks off this record, which we have included with permission from the band as an exclusive free download, is Soporos, an incredible tribal anthem that swirls up and up through spirals of extensive percussion layering and what seems like unreachable synthetic possibilities. A repetitious trumpet line falls under the swelling synth and brings the mass of energy to a focal point and the beat enduces head nodding unlike anything I have heard from Brazil. This music is very deep, ethereal and connected to something greater, something that leans towards the past but still retained everything going on now. If you are into lush thick grooved based music with lots of colors and dynamics this record is for you. This a collective worth checking out, acoustic to electric, traditional to non traditional, this group brings it on a high level, SCV highly recommends. ~ Erik Otis
